Snapshots of life in Gondar.........

The New Shop ...

We have helped set up a  new shop outside the synagogue in Gondar.  It sells handicrafts made by members of the Jewish community, and provides jobs and added income for local women.    Thanks to Yael, an Israeli volunteer who had the idea which is supported by Meketa and the local community association, Hatikva.  The shop is open on mornings and afternoons for a trial period.  Go along if you are in the area!

The New Club ...

Many Jewish families live in Shewa Dabo, far outside Gondar.  It is an hour’s walk from the synagogue and our first club, too far away for children to walk each day. We opened a new club for them in Shawa Dabu two weeks before Pesach.  There are 90 children from grades 3 and 4 in the morning  and 90 from grades 5 and 6 in the afternoon.  Thanks to generous donations from visitors and supporters we were able to equip the club with new chairs, tables, books and all that was needed.

Most girls in the Gondar Jewish community tend to stay at home and miss school during some of the days of their monthly cycle.   They could fall behind with their schooling and struggle to keep up with the class. We have linked up with the Days4girls project to provide girls with re-usable feminine hygiene kits. Seven kits were sent in time for International Women's Day.

We started a new club in Shewa Dabo – an area further out in Gondar where many of the Jewish families have moved to because the housing is much cheaper.  Click here to find out more about it

Our programme, LIFT, gives direct support to elderly and infirm members of the community living in poverty.  Learn more about it here.
