LIFT: Help for the Vulnerable
Following our many visits to the community we realise that as well as supporting the youngest in the community to ensure they have a better future, another part of the community really needs our help: the elderly and those with illnesses who are unable to work. They are in desperate need of support due to the lack of social programmes in Ethiopia. Sometimes their families or neighbours are able to help by giving them an evening meal, the only meal they have during the day. The older generation are usually supported by their children, but if there are no children, the old people are left destitute. It is common to find elderly people and the sick begging in the streets in Gondar.
Meketa's LIFT programme costs £18 per month, or the equivalent in other currencies. In Hebrew, the number 18 is written using letters that spell the word חי – ‘chai’, Hebrew for ‘life’. A regular donation of £18 a month could provide the cost of food, shelter, and clothing for one family unit. Your generosity to support multiple families for multiples of £18 would be particularly appreciated at this time. This sponsorship scheme to provide support for the elderly and those with serious illness will be administered by the Hatikvah Association, the organization that manages the Synagogue and looks after the community in Gondar.
Please consider becoming a sponsor – your donation is truly life-giving. If you would like to donate or would like more information, please click here and we will get in touch. A regular monthly donation could provide the elderly or the terminally sick with the support that the government and the community in Ethiopia cannot provide.
