Volunteer in Ethiopia

Could you be a volunteer with Meketa during the summer?

You will be helping our local team to run summer holiday activities for children from the Jewish community at the Meketa compound. We will be running morning and afternoon activity groups, according to age, for local children to include crafts, language games, drama, art, music, games and so forth. These activities help boost confidence, social skills, language and much more for children from the poorest households. Overseas volunteers can make a valuable contribution by expanding the range of informal activities on offer as well as providing English language practice and a variety of experiences that are new to the children.

Why should you go to Gondar with Meketa?

In the summer holidays, demand for children’s activities is even greater than the rest of the year – so volunteers are greatly appreciated! Overseas volunteers also provide a welcome support and boost to the local staff . Volunteering for Meketa will give you an unforgettable 4 weeks – helping very disadvantaged children while experiencing a different culture and seeing a fascinating country. You will get the chance to get to know the Zera Israel community, learn about their return to Judaism and share your own Jewish interests with them.

What will volunteers be doing?

Depending on your skills, you could be helping children with English, crafts, music, art, drama or running sports or creative activities. You will be working alongside professional local youth workers and playscheme leaders. Before going out we will discuss with you your particular experience and skills and find the best way to match these with activities in the local community. We run an individualised orientation session for all volunteers before leaving and provide you with as much information as possible, as well as suggestions of what you can do to prepare before you go out.

All year round volunteers

We can use volunteers at any time of the year in different areas so if you are free at a different time of the year please contact us to discuss other possibilities at volunteer@meketa.org.uk

Most girls in the Gondar Jewish community tend to stay at home and miss school during some of the days of their monthly cycle.   They could fall behind with their schooling and struggle to keep up with the class. We have linked up with the Days4girls project to provide girls with re-usable feminine hygiene kits. Seven kits were sent in time for International Women's Day.

We started a new club in Shewa Dabo – an area further out in Gondar where many of the Jewish families have moved to because the housing is much cheaper.  Click here to find out more about it

Our programme, LIFT, gives direct support to elderly and infirm members of the community living in poverty.  Learn more about it here.
