The After School Club
Ethiopia has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world and only 15% of children proceed to secondary education. This is an area where Meketa is making a difference. Our club had 25 children registered in 2014-2015. In the 2015-16 school year, the club will be expanding to include more children and an additional age group. To accomodate this expansion, we built two new classrooms and hired one additional teacher.
State education provides for a half day session for each child. The classes are large, between 60 to 80 children, and it is not possible for the teacher to give individual attention to each pupil. The After School Club, shown on the picture to the left, provides the background and support for the children and assistance with homework to supplement the education they receive in state schools.
The After School Club has been in operation since June 2014. The staff is Gech (the Head Teacher), Eshetu, Emawa, and Yikoye Yenesew and Agnadis who have joined in 2016. The children attend either before or after their allotted session at the state run school. They study Maths, English, and computer skills and spend time in the library reading books for pleasure.
We are delighted that the children from the after-school club have achieved top exam results this year. The club has seen the improvement in exam results; 8% points in Maths and 9% points in English.
And in between studying their subjects, they find time for GAMES!
