Child Sponsorship

Meketa's Child Sponsorship Programme provides a one-to-one connection between the sponsor and their child beneficiary.  Sponsors make a regular monthly payment, most of which goes directly to the sponsored child's parents or guardian to help them cover the costs of food, shelter, and clothing.   In addition to the direct payments, sponsored children receive a school uniform and set of books at the start of the school year.  In Ethiopia, education is free but children must wear a school uniform and provide their own books and writing materials.  This cost can be prohibitive for poor families: by providing for them in the sponsorship programme,  one of the obstacles to children remaining in education is removed.

A portion of the monthly sponsorship goes to cover the cost of medical treatment for the sponsored child or any member of their direct family, should they need it. The sponsor child also receives an annual health check-up at a local clinic.

Child Sponsorship with Meketa costs £18 per month, or the equivalent in other currencies. In Hebrew, the number 18 is written using letters that spell the word חי – ‘chai’, Hebrew for ‘life.’ Please consider becoming a sponsor – your donation is truly life giving.   If you would like to become a Child Sponsor, or would like more information, please click here and we will get in touch.

Most girls in the Gondar Jewish community tend to stay at home and miss school during some of the days of their monthly cycle.   They could fall behind with their schooling and struggle to keep up with the class. We have linked up with the Days4girls project to provide girls with re-usable feminine hygiene kits. Seven kits were sent in time for International Women's Day.

We started a new club in Shewa Dabo – an area further out in Gondar where many of the Jewish families have moved to because the housing is much cheaper.  Click here to find out more about it

Our programme, LIFT, gives direct support to elderly and infirm members of the community living in poverty.  Learn more about it here.
